some Words about me

Carol J Page

I was born in Lahore, Pakistan, to British and Burmese parents. After World War II, the family left Asia and moved to the UK, my father’s birthplace. We emigrated to Canada in 1956.

I was one of the first three graduates of the newly established Bachelor of Fine Arts programme at Concordia University, Montreal (1967). I studied painting and art history. I have maintained my interest in the visual arts over many years. I also explored and taught other media: photography (Sheridan College), weaving (Canadian Guild of Crafts), architectural drafting (Dawson College), interior design (McGill), colour use in interiors (Académie du Design) and silversmithing (Saidye Bronfman Centre). It was a long and winding road that led me to produce paintings, sketchbooks, drawings, scribbled notes and design plans. The collection forms the basis of my work. My interest in colour manifests itself in the use of textiles, threads, photo images, and metals.

This retrospective presentation is the first public showing of my work. I’m reminded of the Guerilla Girls manifesto that women artists never have to worry about success! So, I continue to keep creativity in my life and am using the Internet to present my work. Perhaps here I can avoid the Art Business.

In 2006 I moved from the Montreal area to Cobourg and later to Ajax, in 2021.  I am influenced by the constantly changing colour of Lake Ontario. These lake colours are incorporated into the interior design of my home. I continue to use that palette in my recent work which includes compositions of threads, vintage textiles, scrap papers, paint, pencil crayon, silver and copper. The website name  – Bleu de Nimes – springs from a 2019 visit to Vieux Nimes.  It  reflects and celebrates the ubiquitous blue fabric.
